One of our top picks for this weekend is a comic book movie that is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. This is because the first weekend of May is generally centered around the release of a superhero movie. Our other two choices include a drama that spans many generations and continues to be relevant thirty years after it was first released, as well as Tom Hanks’ first directorial effort.
The Joy Luck Club (1993)
Decades before Crazy Rich Asians demonstrated that there was a mainstream audience for films starring Asian casts, the adaptation of Amy Tan’s book The Joy Luck Club broke new ground of its own by depicting a group of Chinese immigrant moms and their adult Chinese-American offspring. This was a groundbreaking film in its own right.
The first-generation moms Suyuan Woo (played by Kieu Chinh), Lindo Jong (played by Tsai Chin), Ying-Ying St. Clair (played by France Nuyen), and An-Mei Hsu (played by Lisa Lu) are the true members of the Joy Luck Club. Their aspirations and desires for their children, June Woo (played by Ming-Na Wen), Waverly Jong (played by Tamlyn Tomita), Lena St. Clair (played by Lauren Tom), and Rose Hsu Jordan (played by Rosalind Chao), may not always coincide with what the girls want for themselves. Despite the fact that there is some emotionally charged friction between the two generations, there are also loving links that transcend the brief issues that they are experiencing.

The Mask (1994)
A great number of contemporary comic book movies make a valiant effort to be humorous, yet many are utterly unsuccessful. Exhibits A, B, and C are respectively titled “The Marvels,” “Thor: Love and Thunder,” and “Shazam!” And the wrath of the gods. But why is The Mask still so amusing thirty years after it was first released? It is due to the fact that Jim Carrey was so lovable in his role as Stanley Ipkiss and the fact that he was so hilarious in his role as The Mask, his alter ego. When Jim Carrey took on the job, he was at the pinnacle of his comic abilities, and even if you knew his gags by heart, they are still hilarious.
Stanley was a lowly bank clerk in Edge City until he discovered a mysterious mask that revealed a new element of his nature. This mask allowed him to see a different side of himself. Stanley is a one-man crime spree in his role as The Mask, and he has already won the affection of singer Tina Carlyle, who is portrayed by Cameron Diaz, who is hypnotic in her first film role. However, despite all of Stanley’s newly discovered abilities, he is still sensitive when he is not wearing the mask. And in the event that someone who is genuinely wicked steals the mask, Stanley will have to figure out a method to be a hero even if he does not possess any abilities at all.

That Thing You Do! (1996)
In spite of the fact that Tom Hanks has neither written or directed a great deal of films, he accomplished both for That Thing You Do!, which is so wonderful that we have often pondered the reasons why Hanks did not direct other pictures. Hanks used himself as a supporting character in the film, playing the part of Amos White, a guy who develops feelings for a young band during the 1960s. Guy Patterson (played by Tom Everett Scott), Jimmy Mattingly (played by Johnathon Schaech), Lenny Haise (played by Steve Zahn), and T.B. Player (played by Ethan Embry) are transformed into The Wonders due to White’s direction.
However, the band’s ascent to prominence immediately creates conflicts among the group, even as White brings in Faye Dolan, Jimmy’s fiancée, to tour with The Wonders as their wardrobe mistress. Faye Dolan is played by Liv Tyler. In spite of the fact that the Wonders’ most successful single has the same name as the film, if these individuals are unable to come to an agreement, they will be destined to be a one-hit wonder for the rest of their lives.
