Summary
A number of highly anticipated new films are available on Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, and other major streaming platforms this week, including the 2024 Oscar winner.
This week, “Anatomy of a Fall” finally launches on a streaming service. The Oscar winner has been on the market for a while and can be rented or purchased, but on Friday it becomes accessible to Hulu customers and is the most streamed movie this week. I will definitely be waiting in line to see it.
7 top new movies to stream
Apart from the highly anticipated French judicial drama, there are two more significant releases. “Road House” on Prime Video will make its premiere on the platform this Thursday, while “Bob Marley: One Love” is now available for purchase or rental. You’ll need a Prime Video membership to enjoy this recreation of the 1989 cult hit, even with its large budget, since it won’t be available in theaters.
You may buy some of these titles at a premium price since they are now accessible digitally, but for others, all you need is the correct streaming subscription. While you’re here, be sure to check out the best of what’s new on Netflix as well as the newest TV series available to streamers this week.
These are this week’s best new movies available for streaming.
Bob Marley: One Love (PVOD)
This Bob Marley movie isn’t afraid to focus on the music, but it also explores Marley’s impact on cultural movements in addition to the music itself. The film, which stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as the iconic reggae artist, opens with political upheaval in 1976 Jamaica that resulted in an attempt on Marley’s life and ends with the performance that commemorated his return to Jamaica in 1978.
Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, “Bob Marley: One Love” has received overwhelmingly favorable reviews from viewers. If that’s OK with you, Ben-Adir’s portrayal makes the very cliched biography entertaining to watch.
Purchase or rent right now on Amazon.
‘Shirley’ (Netflix)
A political icon is Shirley Chisholm. She was the first American Black woman elected to Congress. She was the first person to run for president in 1972. “Shirley” is a brand-new Netflix movie that tells the narrative of that campaign and features the legendary Regina King as the title character, Chisholm.
But King isn’t the only fantastic performer in this cast that you should not miss. In addition, the late, great Lance Reddick gives a posthumous performance as Wesley McDonald “Mac” Holder, and Terrence Howard as Arthur Hardwick Jr. Considerably good first reviews suggest that you shouldn’t miss “Shirley” this week.
Start watching on Netflix on March 22.
‘French Girl’ (PVOD)
Starring in “French Girl” is Zach Braff as Brooklyn-born high school teacher Gordon Kinski. When his lover Sophie Tremblay (Evelyne Brochu) begs him to accompany her to Quebec City, where she hopes to work in the kitchen of a new Michelin 3-star restaurant from super-chef Ruby Collins (Vanessa Hudgens), his life completely falls apart. Unexpected twist: Sophie and Ruby were once in love.
A movie is not very good if it doesn’t have a Wikipedia page. It becomes much worse when reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes give the same film a pitiful 25% “fresh” rating. However, based on the trailer, it seems like this romantic comedy may be a decent rom-com. It has star power, if nothing else.
Purchase or lease on Amazon as of March 19.
‘Anatomy of a Fall’ (Hulu)
“Anatomy of a Fall,” a riveting French judicial drama (don’t worry, it’s in English) about the untimely death of her husband Samuel (Swann Arlaud), stars Sandra Hüller as Sandra Voyter. What comes next is a gripping drama you won’t want to stop as the inquiry into Samuel’s tragic death moves forward and Sandra finds herself placed at fault rather than gravity.
This film swept the board during award season, taking up the Best Original Screenplay prize at the 2019 Oscars in addition to its Cannes Palme d’Or victory. The script, director Justine Triet’s amazing work, and Hüller’s outstanding performance make this film, without a question, the best movie available on streaming this week.
Hulu will begin streaming on March 22.
‘Land of Bad’ (PVOD)
The lead actor in “Land of Bad” is Liam Hemsworth, who plays US Air Force Tactical Air Control Party officer Sgt. JJ “Playboy” Kinney. When things go tragically wrong, he is called into a U.S. Army Delta Force special mission to help with drone operations while the team enters the Philippines, which is held by the Islamic State, to rescue a CIA asset. With the help of drone pilot Capt. Eddie “Reaper” Grimm (Russell Crowe), he must make it to the extraction location when it seems that his unit has been destroyed.
“Behind Enemy Lines” is a fitting title for this film, considering Hemsworth and Crowe portray Owen Wilson and Gene Hackman respectively in the 2001 war picture. “Land of Bad” is a great choice if you like the film or simply enjoy classic spy action thrillers.
Purchase or lease on Amazon as of March 19.
‘Road House’ (Prime Video)
If I hadn’t been fortunate enough to witness this film before of time, I would definitely be viewing it this Thursday. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Patrick Swayze’s renowned bar bouncer Dalton in this reimagining of the popular cult movie “Road House.” Instead of being in Missouri, Dalton is a former UFC fighter who is now employed at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys. Conor McGregor, a competitor in the UFC, makes an appearance as a major villain that Dalton needs to avoid.
I still don’t understand why this film isn’t making its theatrical release. This film seems to have been intended for a large screen. However, I’m not grumbling about being able to watch from the comfort of my own sofa.
Prime Video will begin to stream on March 21.
‘Expend4bles’ (Starz)
Action films other than “Land of Bad” are available for streaming this week. The fourth entry in the “The Expendables” series, “Expend4bles,” was released over ten years after “The Expendables 3.” The action franchise’s finest mercenaries, portrayed by Sylvester Stallone, Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren, and Jason Statham, return in this installment. Andy Garcia, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and Megan Fox join them this time.
For whatever it’s worth, the story revolves on our group of heroes preventing the wicked arms dealer Rahmat (Iko Uwais) from obtaining nuclear detonators that have the potential to ignite World War III. However, this should not be seen as anything more than a platform for gunfights, explosions, and whatever else your action movie fandom may want.
Starz will begin to stream on March 20.
