Summary
Top tech of MWC 2024.. Comparable to CES, the Mobile World Congress (MWC) is a trade exhibition with a focus only on mobile technology. The event, which takes place in Barcelona, Spain, has not been very active in recent years, but the industry is making a big comeback to it in 2024.
Top tech of MWC 2024
The sheer volume of fantastic new goods we had to choose from in order to create our best-of list is evidence of this revitalized energy. After seeing hundreds of fascinating, ground-breaking, and all-around awesome new goods, we were only able to decide on six of them to name as the Top Tech of MWC 2024.
OnePlus Watch 2 Pro
Following the failure of its first effort, the original OnePlus Watch, to live up to expectations, OnePlus has returned with a new wristwatch. Expectations were high since this is the company that brought us great smartphones like the OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 12. This time, the OnePlus Watch 2 uses Google’s Wear OS for software, but it goes beyond by including a second operating system and a dual CPU configuration to handle everything.
The end result is a basic real-time operating system (RTOS) when you don’t want to get things done and Wear OS when you want. With this hybrid architecture, a single charge may last the battery at least three days. Performance is excellent due to the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 CPU, which also makes using the OnePlus Watch 2 pleasurable and hassle-free. Generally speaking, however there are a few details that baffle us, like the revolving crown that does nothing when you rotate it.
While no device is flawless, OnePlus succeeds greatly with its novel strategy for extending battery life, easy charging, quick performance, and elegant, wrist-friendly design. We also like the fact that it’s now on sale, barely undercutting the prices of the other 2024 best smartwatches.
Tecno Pocket Go
Not everything of MWC is about phones. Handheld gaming gadgets fall nicely under the realm of mobile technology. Tecno, a brand we adore for its mid-range and folding phone models, made an appearance at the event with the Tecno Pocket Go, a device that puts the Steam Deck idea on your face. It has an AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS CPU, Windows, and a wearable display and controller combo akin to an Xbox. Overall, it offered a personal, engrossing portable gaming experience. The business demonstrated it using the famously power-hungry Cyberpunk 2077 game, and the result was really impressive.
It’s an intriguing spin on the wearable display craze, shifting the emphasis from games to movies. Not convinced about the controller? The Pocket Go glasses are very adaptable since you may purchase them individually and use them as an extension of your computer or phone.
In addition to combining two contemporary trends, Tecno has considered the Pocket Go’s intended user base. It no longer requires the purchase of a particular pair to fit inside and features an adjustment to let those who typically wear glasses use it without them. There is a detachable battery pack on the controller as well. The Pocket Go will be more widely and for a longer period of time useable thanks to these capabilities. We hope that this well-designed and entertaining product receives a broad release.
Honor Magic 6 Pro
You cannot claim that the Honor Magic Pro 6‘s camera module is identical to that of any other phone. A striking design feature of the phone is the dramatic, curved multi-lens configuration located in the upper center of the back panel. It has three cameras: a 50 megapixel wide-angle camera, a 180 megapixel telephoto camera with a 2.5x optical zoom, and a 50 megapixel primary camera with an adjustable aperture.
However, the phone’s camera isn’t what makes it stand out at MWC. It’s the first phone launched worldwide to utilize a silicon carbon battery, which runs cooler and is more ecologically friendly than the more common lithium-ion cell. With a 5,600mAh capacity, it should operate exceptionally efficiently because of new software and a unique power management chip dubbed the E1.
We always give Honor credit for treating the Magic 6 Pro’s battery and battery life with respect. However, it doesn’t end there. With the Magic 6 Pro’s unique control mechanism, you can access applications and operate various functions merely by glancing at the screen. Although it won’t be available on overseas phones at launch, the AI eye-tracking capability should be available shortly.
Xiaomi 14 Ultra
With specifications that pit it against the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is a flagship smartphone. Similar to other Xiaomi Ultra phones, this phone’s focus is mostly on its camera, which was created in collaboration with Leica and delivers excellent results. It makes use of two 50MP telephoto cameras with an optical zoom of 3.2x and 5x, a second 50MP wide-angle camera, and the brand-new Sony LYT-900 1-inch, 50MP sensor with an adjustable aperture.
Xiaomi’s new HyperOS software, which handles the computational parts of photography, and a variety of Leica settings and effects are housed behind the camera hardware. The research center that Xiaomi and Leica have established together is a serious endeavor. Professionals from both companies work together to enhance the performance of mobile devices’ still and video cameras. Considering how excellent the cameras on past iterations of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra have been, we have high hopes for this one.
Aside from the camera, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra has all the features you would anticipate from a top-tier contemporary phone: an IP68 water resistance certification, a large 6.73-inch AMOLED screen with 3,200 x 1,440 pixel quality, a 5,000mAh battery, and 90-watt rapid charging. However, a major factor in its inclusion on our list is Xiaomi’s plan to offer the 14 Ultra internationally, which will make it much simpler to buy and use than if it were just available in China.
HMD Fusion
Currently, HMD Global is best known for producing phones with the recognizable Nokia name. However, at MWC 2024, the company announced the launch of a new brand called HMD, which would sell “original” handsets. The HMD Fusion will be among the first, and it will tackle one of the trickiest mobile conundrums: modular hardware.
Many have attempted in the past, and HMD is conscious of the challenge that lies ahead. With ambitions to support anything from longer batteries to specialized medical devices, the Fusion will employ a simple six-pin connection to allow you to add accessories that improve the usefulness of your phone. Additionally, it has made a development kit accessible for download, which may enable enthusiastic hobbyists and small enterprises to produce their own exclusive line of accessories.
After so many failed attempts, it takes a brave firm to try modular phones, but HMD’s modifications to the recipe, awareness of the mistakes made by others, advancements in 3D printing technology, and general coding expertise offer it a better chance of success. We can’t wait to see the HMD Fusion in the summer and are thrilled to learn about it at MWC.
Motorola Adaptive Display Concept
Although the term “Motorola Adaptive Display Concept” doesn’t actually explain much, we know you’ll be interested when we tell you that Motorola is attempting to wear a flexible smartphone around your wrist. The foldable display and ingenious hinge technology concealed within a regular-looking phone—which, when combined with a unique bracelet, enable you wear your phone like a smartwatch—are the key to this idea.
When the concept phone is unfolded, it resembles a typical 6.9-inch phone. However, behind the ridged rear panel on the back are hinges that allow the phone to be bent, giving it the appearance of a small folding phone. However, it makes a U-shape here rather than a V, which gives it a highly unique appearance from other phones and the very uncommon ability to wrap around your wrist.
After Motorola brought the design from a teaser in 2023 to reality in time for the event, we really tested it out at MWC 2024. As one would expect from a concept phone, it has its share of shortcomings, but what really appeals to us about it is the potential it has for the future and the fact that Motorola isn’t just copying other people’s smartphone designs and applications. The Razr and Razr Plus from 2023 are truly great devices, and we’re curious to see whether the Adaptive Display Concept is a sign of things to come for the range.
