Summary
For many years, video game adaptations have fallen short of players’ aspirations. Because of this, HBO’s The Last of Us is so novel in that it not only embodies the essence of the game that gave rise to it, but also succeeds as a piece of art unto itself. Thanks in large part to showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, this series has fundamentally revolutionized what a video game adaptation can be. Prior to this, Mazin co-created the highly acclaimed HBO miniseries Chernobyl, while Druckmann co-created the video game series The Last of Us.
season 2 of The Last of Us
The Wait for The Last of Us season 2 will last at least another year. But we can now reveal what we know about The Last of Us season 2 as the program is getting closer to starting back up. The show picks on Joel and Ellie’s journey in the next season and adds a few key characters from The Last of Us Part II, the second game.
Who will return for season two of The Last of Us?
Joel and Ellie, played by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the series, will be back. Additionally, Gabriel Luna will return to the role of Tommy, Joel’s brother. These three are the confirmed cast members for now, but there could be more.
In season two of The Last of Us, who will be joining the cast?
For the second season, three significant cast members have been revealed so far. Kaitlyn Dever, the most well-known newcomer, will play one of the main characters from The Last of Us Part II, Abby Anderson. As a co-lead character in the follow-up, Abby causes controversy among gamers due to some of the decisions she makes in the game. Ellie has plenty of reasons to detest Abby, and Abby has a lethal vengeance against Joel. Abby is characterized as “a skilled soldier whose black-and-white view of the world is challenged as she seeks vengeance for those she loved” in the official casting breakdown for the program.
It’s ironic that before Dever became too old for the part, she was considered for Ellie. When she was a younger actress, Dever dazzled fans of FX’s Justified with her portrayal as Loretta McCready in the second season and in her later, infrequent appearances. Prior to taking on a more serious part in Hulu’s Dopesick, Dever also secured a supporting role in Tim Allen’s comedy, Last Man Standing. In addition, Dever starred in Rosaline, Booksmart, and the highly regarded sci-fi horror movie No One Will Save You on Hulu.
Additionally, Isabela Merced has been cast as Dina, a young lady who develops feelings for Ellie. Similar like Dever, Merced began her career as a young actor before moving on to more adult parts. Before obtaining parts in Sweet Girl (shown above), Transformers: The Last Knight, Instant Family, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, and Madame Web, Merced starred in Nickelodeon’s 100 Things to Do Before High School series.
Prior to playing Dora in the live-action movie Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Merced contributed to the Dora the Explorer series as Kate’s voice in Dora and Friends: Into the City!. The next movie Merced will be in is Alien: Romulus.
Young Mazino, a co-star in the Beef, has been cast as Jesse, Dina’s ex-boyfriend. Jesse is described as “a pillar of his community who puts everyone else’s needs before his own, sometimes at terrible cost” in the casting release. Mazino’s most notable role to date was in Beef, for which he was nominated for an Emmy for his depiction of Paul. Mazino’s main television appearances before then were as guests on Blue Bloods, Prodigal Son, and New Amsterdam.
The actress Catherine O’Hara, who starred in Schitt’s Creek and Home Alone, has joined the cast of The Last of Us season 2, according to a scoop released by Entertainment Weekly on February 2. During an appearance on What What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, O’Hara said that her son works as a set dresser for the program. The actress then admitted to the Bravo anchor that she was in discussions to join the cast, which HBO subsequently verified.
Who will the renowned actress portray? Not Abby, that is. Although her role is yet unknown, you can be sure that the program will be better off with her in the cast.
Will the events of the second game be covered in The Last of Us season 2?
Naturally, The Last of Us Part II will serve as the direct inspiration for the second season. In contrast to the previous season, Part II’s extensive story will be adapted across many seasons. “Some of the stuff I’m most excited for [in Part II] is the changes we’ve discussed and seeing the story come to life again in this other version,” Druckmann said in a March 2023 interview with GQ. Additionally, it significantly taps into your game-related emotions in a novel manner, which is why I find it intriguing.
“I think that the amount of story that remains that we have not covered would be more than a season of television,” Mazin said to Gizmodo earlier in 2023. Therefore, the plan would be to produce more than just one more season, providing we can continue. However, this isn’t the type of program that will go for seven seasons.
This series is likely to adapt the game The Last of Us Part III as well, if Naughty Dog creates it. The Last of Us Part III seems an obvious choice given the success of Part II, however it has been four years since the original sequel’s release, and no formal announcement of a sequel has been made as of yet.
When does season two of The Last of Us start filming?
really quickly. Many members of the group have already arrived in Canada, even though the official start date of filming in Vancouver and British Columbia is February 12. Recently, two workers of Zarak, a restaurant in Vancouver, tweeted a photo of Ramsey, Mazino, and Merced with executive producers of The Last of Us, Mazin and Jacqueline Lesko.
Pedro Pascal had a shoulder injury, as seen by his arm being in a sling while attending the Emmy Awards. That might be the reason he isn’t in the image up there. Nevertheless, it is unlikely that Pascal’s injury would impede the second season’s production, which is scheduled to begin on September 9. Despite reports that Pedro Pascal had wrapped up shooting his parts, HBO has already refuted such reports.
For season two of The Last of Us, who is directing?
Season 2 episodes will once again be directed by Mazin, Druckmann, and returning director Peter Hoar. According to Deadline, Mark Mylod, who just won an Emmy for HBO’s Succession, is one of the new directors for this season. For The Last of Us season 2, experienced HBO filmmakers Stephen Williams (Watchmen) and Nina Lopez-Corrado (Perry Mason) have also joined the cast. Episodes of Marvel’s Loki series were directed by Kate Herron, who was the final director.
When does season two of The Last of Us premiere?
HBO will debut season two of The Last of Us in 2025. Although a precise release date has not yet been announced, insider Daniel Richtman has said that the second season would debut in March or April of 2025. It would be advisable for readers not to get their expectations up just yet, considering Richtman was the one who said that Pascal had completed shooting his sequences.
