Google is releasing a new AI-enabled tier of Google One, after the announcement of a rebranding of its Bard AI chatbot.
The chatbot is currently known as Gemini, after the name of its foundation large language model (LLM). Google has also recently announced a number of service improvements, including Gemini Advanced, a premium version of Gemini based on the new Ultra 1.0 language paradigm.
According to TechCrunch, Sissie Hsiao, Google assistant vice president, stated at a recent press conference that the Ultra 1.0 model makes Gemini Advanced “far more capable at highly complex tasks with a range of applications like coding, logical reasoning, following nuanced instructions, and creative collaboration, amongst many others.”
What are the benefits of Google One membership?
“Not only does Gemini Advanced allow you to write longer prompts, it can also better understand the context of your previous prompts,” she went on to say.
The latest Google One tier, Google One AI Premium, costs $20. This fee brings the service in line with OpenAI ChatGPT Plus and Microsoft Copilot Pro. To access Gemini Advanced, you must first sign up for Google One AI Premium. Google is including it with AI-enabled productivity apps like Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet, as well as 2TB of storage, Google Photos editing features, 10% back in Google Store rewards, Google Meet premium video calling features, Google Calendar enhanced appointment scheduling, VPN by Google One, dark web monitoring, 3% to 10% back on the Google Store, and additional customer support.
Notably, Gemini for Workspace is a rebrand of the Duet AI service, which first added artificial intelligence to Google’s productivity products. The service was mostly enterprise-focused, costing $30 per month per user. Meanwhile, Google One AI Premium is geared at consumers. It effectively contains all of the benefits of the normal Google One Premium 2TB subscription, which typically costs $10 per month.
Google is presently giving a free two-month trial of Google One AI Premium, enabling you to use Gemini Advanced without risk. The offer is accessible in English in 150 countries and territories. Other languages, such as Japanese and Korean, will soon become accessible. There is no information on how long the contract will last.
Google launched their AI venture as Bard in March 2023 as a free and experimental service. The chatbot was initially running on the LaMDA LLM, but the company switched it to the Gemini LLM in December 2023. Google refers to the Gemini Ultra 1.0 model as their most efficient AI model, with its predecessors Gemini Nano, Gemini Pro, and Gemini Ultra. The Gemini Pro LLM, which currently operates the free tier of the Gemini chatbot and is linked with Google applications, has an aptitude comparable to GPT 3.5.
The LLM unification of Gemini and the AI service growth of Google One are timely as the brand reaches the 100 million subscriber mark.
