However, the S9 FE offers a great experience for under $500, combining a brilliant, vivid, 90Hz display with rather quick internals. The OneUI interface, which powers the device, is still excellent and has been thoughtfully designed to maximize the 10.9-inch screen for multitasking and specific programs.
We’re particularly concerned about battery life, in part because the 5G modem will need more power in addition to the gear that comes standard. When it comes to basic hardware, the S9 FE comes with the excellent S Pen, which is by far one of the greatest styluses available today.
It also feels and looks just as luxurious as its more costly counterparts, even if it is a midrange S FE model.Compared to more expensive tablets, it does have a few small limitations, but most users won’t really miss the more advanced capabilities. One such compromise is the Exynos 1380 system-on-a-chip, which isn’t as good as the Qualcomm chipsets in top-performing handsets. Even so, it’s more than capable enough for the majority of tablet users, even if it can’t handle running many resource-intensive programs at once.
That issue is further complicated by the fact that the 5G variant only offers 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. However, considering that cellular-connected slates may be much more costly than their Wi-Fi-only counterparts, the affordable price ultimately makes the compromises worthwhile.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S9+
For most Android tablet enthusiasts, the S9+ is still the most premium option, even if the Tab S9 Ultra may practically be used as a laptop substitute. With a display that rivals any tablet’s, even Apple’s, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor powers some of the most demanding applications with ease. Multitasking on this relative powerhouse is superbly enabled by Samsung’s lauded Android implementation, despite the fact that — similar to the S9 FE 5G — mobile data is limited to the variant with lesser storage (which nonetheless has the same 12GB of RAM).
Even yet, we were able to identify a few little complaints, such as the device’s expected absence of a headphone connector and anticipated last-generation charging rates. Samsung, what’s up with that? However, it seems to be in good working order and will get four years of Android upgrades in addition to a year’s worth of security fixes.
If you’re looking for an all-around winner that can do almost everything you want a tablet to do, this high-end slate is a wonderful buy. Thanks to HDR10+ playback, it’s a pleasure to watch movies on, and if you couple it with a decent Bluetooth keyboard, it’s large enough to work on projects. The cost is the one significant disadvantage.
TCL Tab 10 5G
While most manufacturers choose to add 5G functionality to one of their current tablets, TCL sometimes offers special edition versions that come with their own integrated modems. One such model is the Tab 10 5G, which is about as far from a high-end gadget as you can go while still offering a respectably seamless user experience and a respectable feature set. It offers adequate brightness, speed, and even quality speakers for everyday users, yet it provides mediocre 5G connection.
We’ll pause here to mention that TCL debuted the Tab 10 NxtPaper 5G, an innovative tablet that utilizes the company’s cutting-edge display technology to produce a vivid, colorful, and paper-like screen, at CES 2024. Keep an eye out for the tablet’s possible inclusion on this list if it’s designed effectively.
Apple iPad Air (5th Generation)
While the iPad base model is an excellent gadget in and of itself, the iPad Air from 2022 represents a significant improvement. It’s a pleasure to hold and use, and being as light and thin as a tablet this size gets makes video viewing, surfing, using apps, and communicating easy. Its exceptional longevity is guaranteed by the powerful Apple M1 processor, which powers it—a feature shared by the majority of Apple’s finest products. Furthermore, when it comes to actual 5G and LTE speeds, it outperforms tablets from several other manufacturers.
However, this isn’t an ode to Apple, and the most recent iPad Air isn’t perfect. Specifically, the device’s 64GB internal storage is a shameful compromise on what is otherwise a top-tier product for several hundred dollars. We’re also a bit offended that Apple chose to use an IPS display rather than an OLED, and the panel operates at a very normal 60Hz. There is no 128GB model, therefore you will need to pay an extra $150 to upgrade to the 256GB model.
But for iPad fans, the Air remains the finest 5G option despite all of those drawbacks. It may not be good enough (or cheap enough) to convince many die-hard Android fans, but if you know how to use iOS already or don’t mind learning, it’s still a terrific smartphone.
Surface Pro 9
There aren’t many Windows tablets on the market right now, and the only other model we know of that supports 5G is a big, bulky Dell tablet that you definitely don’t want. But the 5G edition of the Surface Pro 9 is much more special than that. Windows usually operates on the x86/x64 chipset architecture, which is completely different from what phones use. Any Android tablet would simply not allow you to install Windows since the software and hardware are virtually non-verbal.
For this reason, the SQ3 Surface Pro 9 is unique. The inside Qualcomm and Microsoft-developed chipset has a design akin to that of smartphones, but it uses a modified version of Windows and some code interpretation to run the widely used operating system on a processor that isn’t technically compatible. Like this one, most ARM-based Windows computers provide some of the industry leader Microsoft’s adaptability, but not all of it. Although Windows on ARM has historically performed poorly, it is now in a decent to exceptional position due to the rising power and efficiency of contemporary chip architecture.
What is Surface?
That’s all to say, this isn’t the laptop for you if you’re searching for a standard Windows laptop that can run all Windows programs that you can get from the internet and play games. More than two USB ports, Thunderbolt, or USB rates more than 10GBps are not supported. The maximum amount of RAM is 16GB. It also doesn’t quite match the performance of contemporary laptops with AMD or Intel CPUs.
However, Windows on ARM can now use most Windows features. It is more flexible than Android and iOS and doesn’t require locked bootloaders or localized ROMs. It runs a surprising number of apps, although not all games, given how horrible Windows-on-ARM was a few years ago. Aside from the Surface Pro 7+, which is getting old, this is the only new Windows tablet with 5G. Thus, it is worth buying if you can find a good deal, like the under-$1,000 basic model given by at least one company.
