Google Photos.. It may seem like a night and day difference between Google Photos and image-based social networking sites like Instagram. Social networking applications often place more of an emphasis on content and personalisation, while Google’s app is more focused on organizing and storage. Nevertheless, the massive tech company doesn’t completely avoid customisation; in fact, it has introduced capabilities that are similar to those of its rivals. For example, Google photographs offers a more personal experience with its computer-generated groupings of photographs, called Memories. But without algorithms and data, these features don’t work as smoothly as your social media stream.

Guidelines for a feature that will utilize user activity data to help surface more relevant Memories have been added to a Google Photos support page (via 9to5Google). To be more specific, the app will keep track of the Memories you have seen or missed in the past and utilize that data to tailor your experience.
The effort will be rolled out using data gathered over the previous 18 months, the business explains, and consumers will have default access to it. You may change the settings in Google Photos’ desktop app if you don’t want it to use your data in this way. Under Settings → Activity-based personalization, you may disable activity-based customisation. We haven’t seen this option on any of our accounts, either, so it seems like it’s still in the rollout phase.
Although some users may find the app’s functions enjoyable, the exploitation of personal data may not sit well with everyone. The options you see in Google Photos represent Google’s awareness that not everyone will benefit from these capabilities. For instance, you may already make certain faces, animals, and people disappear from the Memories that appear on the app. To tell the app whether you want to view themed or time-based Memories, you may also change its settings.
Although Google Photos differs significantly from social networking sites such as Instagram, it has several similarities with them, such as user data. By being aware of how these applications use your data, you can make sure that you are aware of what using them entails.
