iPhone 15 Pro review: even though it is tiny, it is still powerful

Even so, it still gets warm on occasion, particularly when it is being fast-charged or when it is being used for gaming, but this is nothing out of the norm.

All things considered, I am still loving the iPhone 15 Pro quite a bit even after a month has passed. Although it has been said several times, I believe that the transition to titanium has been one of the most advantageous decisions that Apple has made in a considerable amount of time. Unlike its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro, this is my main phone, and the lightweight material truly does make a difference in usage. It is simpler for me to use for extended periods of time, which is a significant improvement over the previous model. Despite the fact that I use my iPhone with a cover, I really like how Apple made the edges more curved and less sharp so that they do not come into contact with your palm when you are not wearing a case. iPhone 15 Pro review

It is still one of my favorite new hardware features that the Action button is equipped with. I am the kind of person who puts their phone on mute, and it remains in that mode for an infinite amount of time; hence, I have never actually used the toggle that sets the phone to quiet or ring. Having the Action button is something I am grateful for since it allows me to get more out of it now. On account of the fact that the shortcut on the lock screen is not always reliable, particularly in situations when I need to record a moment with my daughter, I continue to keep it configured to open the Camera app. It is something that I use on a daily basis, and I really hope that Apple would ultimately include it in the basic models as well. On the other hand, I believe that Apple need to definitely enhance the Action button by providing it with the capability of having many actions assigned to it via the use of double push, triple press, and other similar methods.

To continue with the topic of cameras, I must say that I am really content with the results that my iPhone 15 Pro produces. My impression was that the iPhone 14 Pro had issues with oversharpening and overprocessing when dealing with colors that were too intense. On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro has been performing far better with Smart HDR 5. There has been a minor improvement in the battery life that I am experiencing compared to what I was experiencing in the first few days, but I still wish it was even better. I reach around thirty percent by six or seven o’clock in the evening, at which time I have an automation that automatically activates the Low Power Mode. This, of course, is with heavy use; if I had more moderate usage, then I would probably get to twenty to thirty percent by eight or nine o’clock in the evening.

This has been the case ever since the first iPhone became available in 2007. With the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, however, this feature has been removed in favor of a brand-new Action button that can be customized to the user’s preferences.

Pressing and holding the Action button is the default option for the button, which allows the user to activate or disable the quiet mode settings. A little pop-up will appear in the Dynamic Island to inform you if it is on or off, and you will experience the same haptics regardless of whether it is on or off. On the other hand, keeping it on the default ring/silent action is tedious since you can now access it from the Control Center and utilize the Action button for something else.

Shortcuts, on the other hand, allow you to maximize the use of the Action button if you really want to go all out. Since I was actually only looking for a quicker method to activate the Camera app, I haven’t delved too further into them just yet; but, I have seen some excellent shortcuts that truly allow you to make the most of the button. A few of users have even developed their own individualized shortcuts, which may bring up a variety of menu selections or even carry out a separate action if certain conditions are satisfied.

The fact that the Action button can only be activated by pressing and holding it is the only thing that I have a problem with. My expectation was that Apple would make it possible for us to attach various actions to different actions, such as a double press or a triple press, so that we could make better use of it. Because it is not logical to restrict it to a single action, it is possible that this is something that may occur in the future as a result of an upgrade to the program.

Undoubtedly, the display on the iPhone 15 Pro is just as stunning as it has always been. With the exception of the fact that Apple did not make any substantial modifications to it from the iPhone 14 Pro that was released the previous year, there is not a much that can be said about it since it is essentially the same as its predecessor.

There is still a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display available on the iPhone 15 Pro. This display has a resolution of 2556 x 1179 pixels and a density of 460 pixels per inch (ppi). Because it is a ProMotion screen, you will have access to variable refresh rates of up to 120Hz as well as a display that is always on. Software and performance review of the iPhone 15 Pro

I have been using the updated Pro model every year, and there has never been a problem with the performance of the device. This year, however, Apple took things to the next level by introducing the A17 Pro CPU for the iPhone 15 Pro (and Pro Max), which utilizes a 3nm architecture rather of a 4nm design this time around.

In addition to a 16-core Neural Engine, you do, in fact, still have six cores of the central processing unit (CPU), two of which are dedicated to performance and four to efficiency. The Neural Engine is now capable of doing twice as many operations per second, and the amount of RAM has doubled from 6GB to 8GB. The iPhone 15 Pro, when combined with iOS 17, has been lightning quick in my day-to-day usage, and I have never had any problems with it’s performance. I never once experienced any lag or stuttering, even when I was browsing Safari with hundreds of tabs open, endlessly scrolling through Instagram and Facebook, browsing Threads, checking in on Mastodon, playing a ton of rounds of Disney Emoji Blitz, streaming Apple Music and Disney+, responding to work emails and messages, getting turn-by-turn directions in Apple Maps, and connecting to my Nexar dashcam. Not once did I experience any of these issues.

In spite of the fact that iOS 17 is more of an incremental version that includes some improvements to the quality of life, it has not significantly altered the way that I use my iPhone. However, there are certain features that are very great. Among them is the StandBy mode, which transforms your always-on display into a little smart display while it is charging on a MagSafe stand. The addition of interactive widgets is another item that I’ve been wanting for a long time, and it’s great to finally have them. You are able to check off things in your Reminders app without having to open it up, and you can also begin playing music without having to go into the Music app.

I did not notice any lag or stuttering at any point in time.

In the course of the Wonderlust event, Apple did demonstrate the capabilities of the A17 Pro processor, which is mostly associated with gaming. Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Resident Evil Village, and Death Stranding are just some of the genuine console games that the iPhone 15 Pro is capable of running thanks to its A17 Pro processor. Given that I am not a major gamer myself, I cannot say that I am really enthusiastic about these games, which won’t even be available until later in the year anyhow. On the other hand, during the first few days that I had using my iPhone 15 Pro, I did encounter some of the overheating issue that was described. My assumption was that this was related to the fact that I was recovering more than 300 gigabytes of data from iCloud, which required the phone to index everything. As a matter of fact, the issue of the phone overheating became a common concern; however, Apple has said that it is due to certain third-party applications and is more software-related than it is due to the design of the phone itself.

After using my iPhone 15 Pro for almost a week, it seems that the issue of it overheating is no longer a concern. I upgraded to the iOS 17.0.3 update as soon as it became available since it also fixed the problem that I was experiencing. In general, however, it seems that the temperature of the iPhone 15 Pro has stabilized on its own after a week has passed. I am no longer concerned about it.

In this context, I would like to add one more thing. I was taking photographs for this very review when I was outdoors in the evening with my iPhone 15 Pro without a cover. The temperature was around 90 degrees, and the weather in Southern California is typically summer. I noticed that the phone was beginning to become a bit warm in my hand. Moreover, I wasn’t really doing anything that required a significant amount of resources; I was just launching various applications to have them shown on the screen in a photograph. Immediately after I reattached my case to the phone, I couldn’t help but feel that it was cool enough to handle once again.

Camcorders on the iPhone 15 Pro

If you pick the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max, you will, sadly, be able to take advantage of the most significant camera advancements that have been released this year. The tetraprism telephoto lens, which provides a fivefold optical zoom, is the component that constitutes this considerable advance. Now, however, thanks to Auto Portrait, I am able to transform almost any picture that contains her into a portrait that seems to be of a much higher quality.

Image processing is another area in which Apple is making use of Smart HDR 5, and it is really rather impressive. One of the most significant issues that I had with the camera on the iPhone 14 Pro was that it oversharpened photographs and produced colors that were too harsh. However, I have not seen this issue with the camera on the iPhone 15 Pro. When compared to my prior iPhone models, my nighttime photographs seem to have a greater level of information, the images are sharper and more clear, and the colors truly stand out.

Due to the fact that the ordinary iPhone 15 Pro did not come with the tetraprism telephoto lens, I did not shoot a significant number of photographs that were taken at a high zoom level for this evaluation. The iPhone 14 Pro from the previous year has a 3x optical zoom, and if you truly want the greater optical zoom this year, you should definitely be contemplating the iPhone 15 Pro Max instead. It is very much the same as the iPhone 14 Pro from the previous year. When I initially began using the iPhone 15 Pro, the battery life looked to be much poorer than it was on the iPhone 14 Pro. This was in my first two to three days on the iPhone 15 Pro. Towards the middle of the afternoon, at around three o’clock, I was around thirty to forty percent, and as a result, I had to plug in sometime in the middle of the day. This was probably because it was still indexing or restoring data in the background, which is what I believe caused this issue.

It seems that the battery life has increased during the first few days of usage, which is now around two weeks after the first use. My usual routine is to disconnect from the charger at eight in the morning, but as of late, I’ve started plugging in around nine o’clock at night. with around twenty percent to thirty percent of the battery left after my regular daily use.

On days when I do need to do a lot of driving, however, the battery life does take a major blow. This is because my phone links to my dash cam, and I need turn-by-turn instructions for when I am traveling to unfamiliar locations. Once upon a time, I was around fifty percent by lunchtime.

In addition to what I said previously about the phone being fairly warm without a case when it was exposed to temps of 90 degrees, I also detected that the battery was depleting at a rate that was far quicker than usual at that period. Again, I was not engaged in any laborious activities; I was only launching a few applications to have them shown on the screen for a photograph. After taking several photographs for around ten minutes, I saw that the battery was depleting at a rate of about one percent per minute. I believe that this is an outlier, but I felt it was important to bring it up here.

Chargers and USB-C ports on the iPhone 15 Pro

The iPhone 15 Pro, along with the rest of the iPhone 15 series, has finally abandoned the Lightning port in favor of the USB-C port. Okay, here we go with all of the details. And it is without a doubt one of the most brilliant moves that Apple has ever taken.

There are a lot of different electronic devices scattered throughout the home, and all of them make use of USB-C cords. With the exception of a few different wearables, the only gadgets for which I had ever required a separate cord were my prior iPhones. On the other hand, now that I have the iPhone 15 Pro, I can easily take any of the hundreds of USB-C cables that I have and plug it in without any issues. It’s a fairly amazing sensation to have.

USB-C is without a doubt one of the most brilliant decisions that Apple has ever made.

However, I am a bit dissatisfied with another choice that Apple made with the changeover to USB-C for the following reason: it does not truly charge any quicker than it did previously. Personally, I haven’t hooked my iPhone into my computer in years, but it is a nice feature if you want to move your images and video files from your iPhone to your PC.

A cap of about 27 watts is placed on the iPhone 15 Pro (and Pro Max), which does not improve the charging speed of the mobile device. Therefore, if you use a 20W adapter, you will get around fifty percent of the charge in thirty minutes, just as you did previously.

Even if there are certain Android phones that are capable of reaching charging rates of more than 100W, the iPhone 15 Pro is still one of the premium phones that is at the slower end of the spectrum. The inclusion of USB-C on the iPhone 15 Pro has, nevertheless, been a nice feature. It is no longer necessary for me to search for a particular proprietary cable; instead, I may just grab any USB-C cable that falls into my possession.

While wireless charging with MagSafe continues to use 15W, wireless charging that is compatible with Qi uses 7.5W. Apple does, in fact, provide reverse wired charging, however it is only available for cable charging and operates at 4.5W. I am still shocked that it has not included reverse wireless charging like other Android brands, such as the Google Pixel 8 and the Samsung Galaxy S23.
