Summary
PlayStation 6.. Naomi Matsuoka, senior vice president of Sony, said recently that the PS5 “will enter the latter stage of its life cycle.” That was seen by many in the industry as suggesting that the new PlayStation system would be shown sooner rather than later.
PlayStation 6
Given that Sony hasn’t previously deviated from their naming scheme, it seems reasonable to presume that the PlayStation 6 will be the name of any next home system. Not only has the name not been formally verified, but the concept of a PS5 Pro or even a PlayStation next generation system has not been made public either. Although it’s almost a given, nothing is certain. Excitement has already been sparked by speculations and possible leaks, so let’s see what the rumors have to say about PlayStation’s future.
PlayStation 6: Speculation on the release date
The most significant indicator of when a PS6 would launch, or even when one was originally intended, is 2027. The following details are taken from an official Microsoft court filing related to the Activision Blizzard acquisition: “SIE would have lost access to Call of Duty by the time it launched the next generation of its PlayStation console, which is likely to occur around [redacted].” This date is suppressed, but detectives have linked it to Microsoft’s agreement with Sony to retain Activision Blizzard games on PlayStation platforms until 2027. That would imply that Microsoft didn’t think a new PlayStation would launch till 2027, at the very least.
That time range is consistent with the life spans of previous generations, if we go back in time. The PlayStation 3 existed for seven years before its successor appeared, and the PlayStation 4 had seven years until the PS5 debuted. Since the PS5 was released in 2020, a seven-year console cycle would resume in 2027. Although we wouldn’t bet on 2027 for sure, anything that happens in late 2027 and beyond seems likely.
PlayStation 6: Cost
It is hard to determine the pricing of a PS6 with any degree of accuracy. We are not even able to begin estimating the price unless we get solid information regarding the specifications inside of it. It would be difficult to envision it costing less than $500 at launch, if not closer to the feared $600 level, given historical pricing and reported specifications.
PlayStation 6: Specifications
The PS6’s exact characteristics are a little hard to come by. According to Moore’s Law is Dead, “it is a given that Sony will maintain its collaboration with AMD to power the PS6 and PS5 Pro.” This makes sense since the PS5 also uses the same chipset, so staying with it would facilitate features like cross-generational gaming and backward compatibility. Given that the next generation of AMD CPUs is anticipated for availability in 2025, the PS6 may be constructed using such chips.
Although no information has been released, we believe a new SSD will be included since it was a significant effort with the PS5 to almost eliminate loading times.
We would also anticipate at least 1TB of storage by the time the PS6 is released, particularly if it turns out to be a digital-only system.
Features PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is a highly special feature that is reportedly being developed on for the PS6. Insider Gaming claims to have a paper about it. According to Insider Gaming, this technology will allegedly enable games to operate in either 4K at 120 frames per second (fps) or 8K at 60 fps. The PS5 Pro is said to be using a less powerful form of PSSR, however the PS6 will reportedly use the strongest version.
