In the last few days, WhatsApp has added a few fascinating features. The much-anticipated sticker maker/editor was finally included in a test version. Soon after, we discovered that Android would soon follow iOS in displaying WhatsApp calls inside the Google Phone app. iOS now does this with its standard Phone app. Similar to this, WhatsApp for Android’s emoji keyboard now displays the brand-new Unicode 15.1 emojis. This capability was just added to iPhones running iOS 17.4.
First released in September of last year, Unicode 15.1 is now supported in current Android beta versions of WhatsApp. However, users were unable to share Unicode 15.1 emojis in their discussions since they never showed up on the app’s emoji keyboard. However, that seems to be about to change, as reported by WABetaInfo, who have seen the new Unicode 15.1 emojis on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.6.7 inside the keyboard.
If you have Gboard, it seems that you may also access these emoticons without using WhatsApp. While I didn’t have the same success using Gboard on my Pixel 6a, our Google Editor Manuel Vonau claims to have seen the Unicode 15.1 emojis on his Pixel 8 Pro. However, considering that iPhone users can currently use these functions on their default keyboard with the iOS 17.4 upgrade, this is one of those things that will undoubtedly make it into the stable version.
The emojis that have recently been introduced include the edible mushroom, lime, and phoenix. In addition, a few different versions of the 108 people-based emojis are provided to show which way they are looking, and a few shaking head emojis are also included to represent popular phrases like yes or no.
We advise you to verify your membership status in WhatsApp’s beta program from the app’s Play Store listing if you are unable to see these emojis at this time. As an alternative, you may sideload the particular WhatsApp beta version from APKMirror. According to WABetaInfo at the time, WhatsApp started working on Unicode 15.1 compatibility for Android back in late January, thus it has been in development for about two months.
